Spotlight: October Student-Athletes of the Month
Every month, we celebrate outstanding student-athletes who demonstrate excellence both on and off the field. For October, we are thrilled to recognize:
Cody Wood

Cody has been having a stellar senior year on the football field, scoring touchdowns as a runner, receiver, and even passer! Beyond his athletic ability, Cody is a true leader, exemplifying the 5 C’s: Character, Competition, Commitment, Community, and Classroom. As one of the esteemed “Seahawk Black-shirts,” Cody embodies what it means to be a Seahawk.
Sumyyah Butler

Sumyyah is a dedicated and talented leader on the South Lakes dance team. Not only has she choreographed many routines for the football season, but she has also managed to balance her leadership role with a demanding studio schedule. Her dedication and creativity inspire her teammates every day.
Congratulations to both Cody and Sumyyah for their hard work, leadership, and passion for their teams!

New Booster Grants: Supporting South Lakes Athletics in 2024
At South Lakes High School, we’re always looking for ways to support our athletes, coaches, and teams as they strive for excellence. This year, the South Lakes Boosters have rolled out an exciting new initiative: Booster Grants. These grants allow coaches to request funding for essential team needs that go beyond what’s provided by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). This initiative was created to ensure our teams have the tools they need to excel both in practice and on the field.
Our first round of grant applications brought in requests from a variety of sports programs, each with specific needs. We’re thrilled to announce that funds have been awarded to help enhance these teams’ resources:
- Dance – Wrist Weights
- Boys Soccer – Scrimmage Vests
- Girls Basketball and Volleyball – Two Portable Scoreboards
- Swim and Dive – New Tech for Scorekeeping
- Girls Volleyball – Hitting Targets
- Girls Lacrosse – New Sticks and Practice Targets
- Girls Soccer – Portable Goals
In total, we’ve granted $4,550 to support our teams in this round of funding.
How You Can Help
Our ability to fund these grants is a direct result of the generous support from our sponsors and community. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in our athletes’ lives, helping them achieve their goals and build lifelong skills through sports.
Booster Grants will open three times a year, allowing coaches to request additional items for their teams. The Booster Executive Board reviews each application and votes to allocate funds, ensuring that the grants go toward resources that have a meaningful impact.

The response from our coaches has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the real impact these grants have on our teams:
“This made my day!! Thank you so much. The girls will be very excited.”
“OMG – this is totally off the charts! This is such a seemingly simple tool that pays huge benefits for our players. Our Boosters are simply the best – thanks!”
“This is awesome – the entire SL Volleyball Program thanks you and all the Boosters.”
“On behalf of all the players, coaches, and families of the South Lakes Girls Soccer Team, we thank you all for your generosity and support. Additional goals for the stadium will allow us to maximize our training days. This will be a great addition as we begin to prepare for the start of our season.”
